Our Mission

Provide the community with emergency medical services of the highest excellence through a dedicated team of highly trained, state-certified Darien High School student EMTs and professional volunteer adult EMT advisors.

A Tradition of Service: Then & Now

Founded in 1970 by John E. “Bud” Doble, Post 53 began as a small Explorer-style program run out of a basement with a converted telephone truck. Within a year, Posties were responding to more than 100 calls annually.

By 1976, Post 53 became the official first responders for the Town of Darien. In 1985, it expanded to provide 24-hour emergency service.

Today, Post 53 is led by state-certified high school EMTs alongside experienced adult EMT advisors. In 2025, Posties responded to nearly 2,000 calls, meeting growing community needs and saving lives.

The Postie Journey

Freshman Year

After applications are reviewed, Post 53 holds two first aid classes, one in the spring and one in the fall. Selected students enter a 90-day candidacy period, where they demonstrate commitment through hands-on tasks. At the end of candidacy, members vote and approved students begin training toward Rider status and their first shift.

Sophomore Year

Students build on their experience as Riders and begin formal EMT training. Classes meet two to three times a week from September through March, totaling more than 180 hours of instruction and hands-on practice. After completing exams and skills testing, members earn Connecticut EMT certification by April or May and advance to the Extras role.

Junior Year

Members continue developing their skills while taking on greater responsibility. Juniors may serve in officer roles, support daily operations, and work toward rank advancement. Eligible members may also begin training to drive the ambulance based on age requirements.

Senior Year

Seniors refine their skills as EMTs and drivers while mentoring younger members. Each year, six seniors are elected as Executive Officers, serving in leadership roles that support training, operations, and overall management of Post 53.

Meet a Crew

“My EMT class journey has been challenging but rewarding. I’ve built strong relationships with my peers while gaining hands-on skills, confidence, and trust in a supportive environment.”

“My favorite part of Post 53 is working alongside people I trust in serious situations while serving my community in a meaningful way.”

“The most fulfilling part of being a leader is seeing how small efforts can brighten someone’s day and bring our community together.”

Training & Support

All members complete rigorous training to maintain strong clinical knowledge and skills. Post 53 conducts monthly call critiques that review assessments, treatments, decision-making, and lessons learned. These sessions support quality improvement and provide mentorship from experienced EMTs.
